Our Story

Our Story Image

Canopy was born from a simple realization by a Wall Street tax attorney. His epiphany: the tax industry is drastically behind when it comes to simple software solutions that address the specific challenges of a modern tax practice.

From that realization we’ve built a cloud-based suite that works to eliminate any element of tax work that doesn’t utilize the strategic and analytical skills of tax professionals and accountants.

We want to give accountants more flexibility and freedom to run their practice the way they want. We’re opening new possibilities for collaboration between team members within their practice, stronger connections with clients, and greater understanding with the IRS.

We’re creating environments where meetings are less about getting on the same page, and more about drawing from expertise and finding smart and strategic solutions

In a nutshell, we want to elevate every tax professional’s role as trusted advisor to their clients.

    Kurt Avarell begins coding the first version of Canopy in his basement after leaving his career as a tax attorney on Wall Street.
